XBU Remembrance Sunday
On Sunday 14 November 2021, a group of 6 Explorer Scouts and two Leaders attended the annual Remembrance Day service on the summit of Great Gable. After camping overnight, the group rose early to climb up England’s 10th highest mountain to be part of a unique act of remembrance led by the Fell & Rock Climbing Club.
At this annual event, the Club’s president explains the relevance of the Commemorative Plaque at the summit and invites the gathered crowd of several hundred walkers and climbers to honour the two minutes silence in memory of those who have died in wars.
Members of the club raised funds to purchase 3,000 acres of Cumbrian Fell, including Great Gable, Green Gable, Allen Crags, Lingmell, Great End and Kirk Fell and in 1924 gifted the land to the National Trust as a memorial to club members who died in the First World War and “for the enjoyment of the people of our land for all time.” This makes it the largest war memorial in the world.
The fine clear weather provided stunning views of the northern lakes and mountains, with views out to sea. This provided a perfect backdrop for Lucy’s investiture as an Explorer. A great weekend was enjoyed by all.
